Program Management of UST Removal

The challenge:

A convenience store chain required the removal of underground storage tanks (USTs) at 23 sites across the state of Ohio. GES was engaged to provide project management to expeditiously manage the logistical, technical, and regulatory elements of the tanks removal.

The GES solution:

GES provided consulting assistance and client advocacy. Project management activities included permit acquisition; coordination of client contractors and client employees; site visits; and overall project management to the client’s schedule and budget. GES provided oversight of UST field and piping trenches, and collection of all post-excavation soil samples. Excavated soils were screened using a photoionization detector, and submitted to a mobile data acquisition and processing laboratory (DAPL) for analysis of constituents of concern. GES coordinated the transportation and disposal of the USTs and components, impacted soil, impacted groundwater, and residual waste. GES prepared and submitted closure reports, according to state guidelines, as each site was remediated.

The benefits:

A complex project at multiple sites, involving dozens of participants, was managed efficiently and completed by GES’ professional staff in less than ten months.
