Brownfields Assessment and Remediation

GES was retained as a consultant and Licensed Site Professional (LSP) to facilitate the divestment and redevelopment of a former retail service station property under the Massachusetts Brownfields Act. The site was opened as a disposal site following the discovery of petroleum-related contamination during the removal of underground storage tanks, with further assessment revealing high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals in the soil. GES was tasked with implementing an aggressive strategy to achieve case closure (“no significant risk”) in less than one year. GES immediately delineated the contamination extent and determined that targeted remedial soil excavations and risk reductive measures were feasible within the required timeframe. GES executed two major, targeted soil excavations, managing all necessary permits, demolition of the former station building, and on-site dewatering. The case closure report (Class A3 RAO) was successfully filed within the tight deadline. GES’s use of an aggressive remediation strategy, technical justification for attributing metals to background conditions, and a detailed Method 3 Risk Characterization not only secured property divestment to a commercial developer but also reduced the expected soil excavation by 30%, saving the client significant time and money.
